The "Blue Flag" program

The "Blue Flag" is the most recognized and popular international ecological symbol of quality in the world. Awarded since 1987 to beaches and marinas that meet strict requirements. A prerequisite for the award of a coast with the "Blue Flag", is the water quality in it to be "Excellent". No other classifications of quality, even "nice", is accepted by the Program. In order to be awarded, a beach has to meet a total of 33 criteria (25 for marinas) which refer to cleanliness, organization, information, safety of swimmers and visitors, protection of the coastal natural resources and coastal areas and environmental awareness. Founder and International Coordinator of the Program is the Foundation for Environmental Education ( FEE), based in Denmark, with members of 73 countries from all continents. Represented in Greece by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF), the oldest environmental organization in the country (since 1951), which, this year, completes 65 years of uninterrupted activity in environmental interventions in nature conservation projects, environmental education (with 5 timeless networks approved by the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs), and general information and awareness
